Winchester Soccer Club

Dual Rostering

(11.26.02)

Dear Town Team Players, Coaches and Parents:

As stated in our Philosophy Statement, the Winchester Soccer Club’s purpose is to promote and enhance the game of soccer for the citizens of Winchester.  The mission of the WSC includes the building and operation of a soccer program that provides an equal opportunity for all players to develop skills to whatever level they are capable and willing.

The WSC recognizes the diversity of needs within the WSC and supports and encourages all players in their pursuit of vigorous physical exercise, team sports and healthy competition.  Playing on more than one team can offer players an enjoyable opportunity for further skill development and competition.  The WSC supports and encourages players and coaches in this effort.

The WSC also recognizes that scheduling conflicts may result from playing on more than one team.  For example, a town team player may also choose to play on a Maple team or a District or ODP State team.  While extra soccer play is good for skill development, these scheduling conflicts can diminish the forum the WSC is committed to provide for the development of good teamwork and sportsmanship practices by all participants, including players, coaches and parents.  In order to minimize scheduling conflicts between town teams and non-town teams, we want to re-confirm that the following rules shall govern multiple roster conflicts:

·        Weekly Practices.  The WSC town team coach and the coach of the non-town team within the same age group will be expected to agree on a regular weekly practice schedule that does not conflict.  In the event practice schedule conflicts can’t be avoided, Division 1 Maple players may choose to attend their Maple team practices.  Players on any other non-town teams (including Maple Division 2 or D teams) shall alternate attendance between their town team’s and their other non-town team’s practices.

·        Regular Season Schedule.   WSC town teams’ regular season games are scheduled on Saturdays.   Maple teams’ regular season games are scheduled on Sundays.  There should be no regular season scheduling conflicts.

·        Columbus Day and Memorial Day Tournaments.  There are two regularly scheduled opportunities for holiday weekend tournament play, Columbus Day and Memorial Day.   WSC town teams will have priority for Columbus Day tournaments and non-town teams (typically this will be a Maple team) will have priority for the Memorial Day tournaments.  Since tournament play is at the initiative of each coach, WSC coaches will lose their priority for the Columbus Day tournament if participation in a tournament has not been scheduled and confirmed with players and non-town team coaches by September 15.  Similarly, non-town team coaches will lose their priority for the Memorial Day tournament if participation in a tournament has not been scheduled and confirmed with players and WSC coaches by April 1.  As to any other tournament (other than the major tournaments described below), players will be expected to alternate attendance in the event of a schedule conflict.

·        Other Major Tournaments.  Teams also may elect to participate in other tournaments that may create a conflict with a WSC town team’s regular season schedule.  These tournaments include the State Cup Tournament, MTOC and, after Memorial Day, the Regional Olympic Development Program Tournament.  The WSC believe these tournaments can offer a valuable, competitive soccer experience and the WSC encourages and supports players’ participation in these tournaments.  The following rules shall apply to these major tournaments:

o  WSC players shall be expected to play in their regularly scheduled town team game unless it is not possible, upon the conclusion of the first game, to arrive at the second game in time for the kick off.  Only if there is such a direct scheduling conflict will the tournament game have priority.

o  Major tournament coaches will be expected to communicate the existence of a direct scheduling conflict to the coach of the affected team as early as possible.

It is the WSC’s hope that by confirming its support of our players’ pursuit of the soccer experience that is best for them and by confirming rules that will minimize scheduling conflicts; we will strengthen our commitment to being a broad-based soccer program that exists for the benefit and enjoyment of all Winchester soccer players.  Please contact your Age Group Coordinator or your Commissioner, if you have any questions about this policy.
