'Babe' Mullen To Be Honored Former Parks Superintendent Director Herbert S. 'Babe' Mullen will be honored Saturday when the West Side Field will be dedicated in his memory. ... The field is located on Lockeland Rd, opposite the West Side Fire Station.
Town Meeting approved the renaming of the field a year ago. Saturday's dedication has been organized by the 'Babe' Mullen Memorial Committee.

'Babe' Mullen Saturday as the town officially dedicated the Herbert S. 'Babe' Mullen Playground in memory of the long-time resident and town official.
... A memorial rock with a bronze plaque funded by voluntary contributions sits prominently on the field that now bears his name.
... directed the construction of the 'Chuck Wagon' ... He supervised the landscaping of the Mill Pond. He introduced the domestic ducks, geese and swans which are such an attraction at the pond. ... He invented and produced the safety ladders with small metal drums which protect lives at our ponds, the river and the beaches. ...

Claire E. Mullen
EXETER, N.H. -- Funeral services were held yesterday for Claire E. Mullen, 87, who died Monday, Sept. 1, 1997 after a long illness. She was the wife of the late Herbert S. "Babe" Mullen.
Born in Boston, she was formerly a resident of Stoneham and Winchester.
Mrs. Mullen was a former secretary to the Scout executive of the Fellsland Council and the Minuteman Council for the Boy Scouts of America for 35 years.
She was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Winchester and the treasurer of the Winchester Grange for 54 years.
Survivors include a son, the Rev. H. Stanley Mullen Jr. of New Bedford; a daughter, Irene Craig of Nottingham, N.H.; six grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were by the Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester.
