New Carpooling is good for the player and good for the parents - and SAVES GAS MONEY!

The BAYS geographic group of towns runs basically from Winchester down to North Attleboro – so our two towns frame the northern and southern borders, basically.  Someone has to be on the northern end!  This does mean in some brackets our teams have a few games with longer drive times.  Think of this as an opportunity versus an economic (i.e. gas), time or social challenge!

Our experience running a lot of travel teams over many seasons is these travel games are the most fun.  Why? One word: Bonding.  Parents and Players!

One of us drove by the car driving a group of girls last week (the car has a load of parents) –and when we went by them – the girls were absolutely in a doubled over fit of laugher over something…who knows what.  You just cannot replace that – the fun of soccer takes many forms – and happy players contribute to making good and successful players.  Longer drives actually make this situation more likely to arise.

So next time you are about to say – “Coach, we will meet you at the field” – think twice.  Carpooling from a location like the Swim Club or VO parking lots – is definitely the way to go.  Save money too!

Pile the kids into a couple of cars – and even more challenging get the parents into just a few too!  Designate someone, give the coach a break, to just organize this stuff.   It is easy – and well worth the effort!

New Manchester Field Presentation:

On April 10th the Winchester Soccer Club represented all of the Winchester Youth Sports in a 'One Voice' show of support for the Manchester Field Project.  Click here to view a copy of the presentation.

The Manchester Field renovation will include a new track and baseball field for the high school, football field for the middle school and high school programs, and a multi-use turf field for soccer, field hockey and lacrosse.

Winchester has very limited field space and our field utilization, as a town, has reached an all time high. A redesigned Manchester Field complete with turf and lights will expand our field inventory through extended hours and decreased field closures due to weather conditions.

Winchester Soccer Club Celebrates 40th Anniversary:

The WSC is one of the oldest and largest youth soccer clubs in Massachusetts.

The WSC, founded in 1967, has grown from a small club with a handful of recreational teams to club with 1,600 registered players, a 25-member volunteer Board, hundreds of coaches and a wide variety of programs to serve the diverse needs of our broad membership.

We are planning to celebrate our long history of providing recreational activities for the kids of Winchester and would like your input. Please contact us at secretary@winchestersoccer.org with your ideas!

Fields! Fields! Fields!

Field space is always scarce in Winchester but this spring season is the tightest season in the club's history. With the introduction of new programs and the continued growth of existing programs, the demand for Winchester field space has exploded in recent years. Our registrations continue to climb, this season over 1,600 players have registered for WSC programs.

The initial Spring 2008 Field schedule represented a 15% reduction in our field space and did not allocate enough field space for us to run our programs. This initial allocation would have forced us to make widespread cuts affecting hundreds of our members.

The WSC Board and the Fields Committee worked to restore the fields that we need to run our programs this spring season. We thank the Town Manager, Board of Selectman and the Recreation Department for their support and their efforts in this process.

We were able to restore most of the game field space that we need, though our allocations were still reduced by 10%. Some teams will be limited to one practice a week. Many teams will not receive the field space that they wish and we will squeeze more teams on to the fields this spring. We ask your patience this season.

Field space to reschedule and make up games is severely limited this season. We encourage all teams to 'play the schedule' to avoid makeup games.

The WSC is committed to work with the Town and the other community-based, youth sports organizations to streamline the process in the future. We ask for your support with this effort. If you would like to get involved, please contact Kip Garlow, WSC Fields Committee Chair at kgarlow@comcast.net

WSC Board Adopts Bylaws:  The WSC Board of Directors, in a Special Meeting convened for the purpose, unanimously approved an amended set of Bylaws on March 20, 2008. The amended Bylaws, adopted at the Board Meeting on April 2, 2008 are the product of several months of careful  and thoughtful review from an excellent legal team drawn from our community.  Richard Bardi, Esq.; Gary Grassey, Esq.; Jacqueline Welch, Esq.; Joop Grevelink and Charlie Stackhouse formed the core of the Bylaws Committee.  The Bylaws Committee carefully weighed and considered all advice and suggestions put forward by Club, Winchester community and WSC Board members during this elaborate process. In step with a changing legal landscape, the new Club Bylaws incorporate new best practices.

This overhaul of our Club Bylaws represents a major step forward for our Club and we appreciate the tremendous effort expended by the Bylaws Committee to bring our Bylaws up-to-date with the realities of our growing Club.  Click here to see the amended Bylaws.

Message to WSC Coaches from the Sportsmanship Chair:

Dear 2008 Spring Soccer Coaches:

You are the great ones for leading our children through the ups and downs, fun and development in the game of soccer and more importantly life.

Like it or not you are role models – and as you think about your season think about the things you can control to make your season a guaranteed success. You cannot really control the weird scores that hit the top of the cross bar, bang off your goalie’s head and go in, the questionable referee calls, the sick player, the bad directions, etc. You can control the way you and your team represent our town, our club and yourselves.

Good sportsmanship is a guaranteed ingredient of not only a successful season but parents that appreciate their child’s emotional development. A good attitude builds winners!

Barry Scheer Retires from WSC Board:

Barry Scheer, who has been involved with the WSC for over twenty years, retired from the WSC Board in March. He will continue to be an active club member and plans to continue to coach both Sachems FC and WSC teams.

"I have had a great run on the board and I have established great friendships and working relationships with people I have come to know, trust and admire. We have accomplished some great things for our players and the town along the way," said Barry.

"Barry Scheer was a very sensible, selfless, and consistent contributor to the board. He was a model volunteer. He was a guiding light and will be greatly missed." said Chris Scanlon, WSC Coaching Director.

GU9 Blast-off Event:

WSC hosted a special event on Saturday March 22 to prepare all U9 girls for their first travel season. In addition to meeting their coaches and receiving their travel uniforms, the girls and their parents received an orientation into the world of BAYS travel soccer.

The Blast-off event featured guest speaker, Tracey Leone. Leone, a Winchester resident, is currently the Assistant Coach of the Harvard Women's Soccer team. Tracey has a distinguished career in US Women's Soccer as both a player and a coach. She is the first American to win a World Championship as both a player and a head coach. The girls were thrilled to hear Tracey speak about US Women's soccer and we hope to foster strong ties between her and the WSC.

A special thanks to John Jenke and Dave Sauer for conceiving of and coordinating this unique event.

Difference between Sandlot and Sachems FC Academy:  Soccer is a team sport, and the WSC strongly encourages all players to participate in the Sandlot (In-town) program where they will learn valuable teamwork skills, and get the game time to fully develop as a player. For those children who aspire to play soccer at a premier level, Sachems FC Academy provides an additional opportunity to play in a challenging and fun environment to improve their skills.

This unique program was highlighted in the recent edition of Mass Youth Soccer News, the state-wide soccer publication, as well as the Winchester Star

Where is Ciarcia Field? Did you know that the high-school playing field, popularly known as Skillings Field, was officially named for John H. "Jake" Ciarcia by Town Meeting in 1995?  Ciarcia (1933-2005) was a life-long resident of Winchester who served as Town Engineer for 24 years, retiring in 1994.  The Chamber of Commerce named him Citizen of the Year in 1986.

To recognize Mr. Ciarcia's contributions to the town of Winchester, the WSC asks our membership to refer to the high school fields by its official name: Ciarcia Field.

Winchester Soccer Club recently donated $2,000 to the Winchester Veterans Honor Roll Committee. The donation which was given from the receipts of the Vets Day Soccer Tournament, will be put towards the construction of the new Veterans Memorial. James A. Johnson III, Chairman of the Honor Roll Committee was present at the club's AGM in November 2007 to receive the check.
